Lifestyle Changes

There is a significant body of research that has shown that making simple lifestyle changes can sharply reduce ADHD symptoms.

Exercise: Research has shown that exercise can decrease hyperactivity and increase attention. For some children, regular daily exercise of any kind makes a dramatic, immediate difference, while for others, the effect is more subtle and may take longer to notice benefits in attention and learning. Picking the right types of exercise also is important. I will work with your child to identify what works best and ways to motivate exercise as a regular practice.

Sleep: More than 200 studies have shown that proper sleep is extremely important for children with ADHD. Moreover, many children with ADHD have sleep disturbances and/or issues with sleep related to their medication. I will work with your child to identify sleep issues and develop practices and routine that will improve their sleep, which in turn may help increase attention and learning.

Green time versus Screen Time: Research has shown that children who spend time in nature regularly are less likely to develop ADHD, are calmer and derive more benefit from exercise there than in the city. There is also a subset of children with ADHD that are negatively affected by screen time in a dramatic way, especially with regard to sleep. I will work with your child to increase time in nature while simultaneously decreasing time spent on tablets and phones.

Diet, the microbiome, and mineral deficiencies: I also work in partnership with a nutritionist who offers guidance on a plan that can help increase attention and decrease hyperactivity. Children with ADHD do better with a diet higher in protein and complex carbohydrates and lower in sugar, simple carbs, and food dyes and preservatives. There is also a lot of research that our microbiome, the collection of all microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and their genes, that naturally live on our bodies, has a major impact on neurotransmitter production that contributes to a healthy functioning brain. Research further indicates that many children with ADHD are deficient in a variety of essential nutrients. My nutritionist can provide advice on meal plans, improving your child's microbiome, and she can perform testing to determine whether your child could benefit from supplementation with various vitamins and minerals.
